A massive media force in the North East and naturally beyond is SKY, LARK arranged for the newly opened Newcastle, City to be paid a visit by their lifestyle editor whose verdict was ‘A perfect location in a fabulous building which has undergone an impressive regeneration.’

Not only a Mecca for the ubiquitous stag and hen parties but culture vultures, foodies and couples all flock to the toon for a few days or more to lap up the Geordie charm.

That’s why hotels continue to pop up, and continue to do well, in this area. The latest addition being Roomzzz at Friar House, a grade II listed building that is in their words ‘exquisite elite luxury’.

Friar House has undergone a £5m investment and opened its doors this month under their protective custodianship ethos of ‘let the legacy of luxury live on’.

The fifth location for Roomzzz sees an intensive restoration of one of Newcastle’s most historic and celebrated residences which has been brought back to life as the latest of the City’s of luxury places to stay.

The building is gated, and therefore very secure, a reassuring touch for guests. As an aparthotel you can enjoy an independent stay at Roomzzz and not feel tied to the place in anyway – or indeed, feel like you need to ‘get your money’s worth’ by hanging around the place. A great place to touch base after a day sightseeing, wandering along the quayside, discovering hidden gems, or – let’s be honest – a night on the tiles of Collingwood Street.

Set just off the beaten track, behind Central Station, the building is an aesthetically pleasing 19th Century townhouse, once belonging to ‘celebrity socialite’ Sir Robert Hopper Williamson who as Recorder of Newcastle and chancellor of Durham was amongst the elite of the North East and one of the most important men in the area.

There are 14 suites; I stayed in the Liberty Suite which had the ‘wow’ factor in every way. A fabulous living-kitchen area with up-to-date stylish décor and first class facilities; I can imagine any party of people finding the utilities and the interior to be most impressive – making for a comfortable and enjoyable stay.

Roomzzz states: “Guests will experience top to toe luxe in suites complete with Apple technology, ‘best night sleep’ beds, state of the art kitchens and chic bathrooms cascading with the feel of opulence and exclusivity.”

One thing worth noting was the black-out blinds in the rooms which ensured a flawless night’s sleep and despite the central location, there was little to no noise at all from any outside disruption.

A perfect location in a fabulous building which has undergone an impressive regeneration.’
